How To Make A Border Mask

Supplies Needed:

Paint Shop Pro get the demo HERE
A ding of your choice
( A ding is a font that types a picture instead of a letter)
And basic knowledge of PSP

If at any time you make a mistake,
Click edit/undo and try again.

1. Open PSP

2. Select the ding you will be using.
If your ding is not installed, that's ok.
Go to the folder where you have it downloaded to,
and double click it to open, then minimize it.
It will now be usable in PSP without having to install.

3. In PSP, open a new raster transparent image 300 x 300 pixels.

4. Set your stroke and fill to black in color palette

5. Click on the text tool and then click on the blank image.

The ding I'm using is Seperates, I used the small a letter twice to get this pattern.
Make sure the size of the ding isn't too big,
You want it to fit in the blank image.
Click apply. If the pattern is not aligned towards the bottom,
Select the mover tool and drag it down.

We want it close to the bottom, but not touching the border.
Click selections/select none.

6. Add a new raster layer. Leave it at the top and flood fill it with black.

7.Take your mover tool while still having the black layer selected
and drag it up so you can see the pattern.
Make sure you align the edges of the black with the edges of the ding pattern.
You may need to enlarge the image some to see the edges better.
It should look like this

Don't worry about the edges showing transparent, we are going to crop in a bit.
Just make sure its as centered as possible.

8. Add a new raster layer, this time moving it to the bottom
You can either click
a. Layers/arrange/move down
b. On layer palette click layer to bottom

9. Flood fill this layer with white.

10. Now make sure the black layer & pattern layer are definitely touching,
then you can merge visible.
It will help if you enlarge the image to see if they are touching.

11. Select the crop tool and put it in the upper left corner,
and drag it to the lower right corner.
It'll box the whole image like this
Line the boxes up like in this image so they are all touching the edges.

12. See where the little boxes are on the sides?
That's where we will move them inwards to crop off the extra
so when we use the mask it will line up perfect.
So put your cursor on the left side box, it will turn into a two headed arrow.
Move the left side inward towards the pattern making sure not to cut any off.
Again it helps to enlarge. See how close the line is?

Now do the same on the right side

The little box on the bottom edge, put your cursor there and drag it
up til you get a few pixels from the black.
If it looks ok, like theres only a little white there, dont move upward..
Make sure the top box is all the way to the top as to not cut off there.
Then double click inside to crop the mask,

15. Almost done. Now to make sure it's a good size,
we are going to resize it to 300 x 300 pixels.
Click image/resize and do these settings,
300 for width and height and all layers checked.
Make sure the lock ratio is NOT checked.

Click ok.

16. Save as a .jpg file with a name like (yourname)mask1.jpg

And now you have a mask.
Use my mask tutorial to try it out.
